1903 Gold $1.00 Louisiana Purchase McKinley BU
In 1903, the United States marked a monumental centenary with a special gold dollar. This coin, struck in 90 percent pure gold, features a left-facing portrait of President William McKinley on its obverse. Rendered by Charles Barber, the profile captures the president in quiet dignity, surrounded by the name of the issuing nation. The reverse of the coin displays a delicate olive branch alongside the dual dates of 1803 to 1903, representing the span of a century since the Louisiana Purchase. Though the Philadelphia Mint originally produced 17500 of these gold pieces, their subsequent history took a dramatic turn. A vast number of the unsold coins were eventually melted down, leaving only a fraction of the original mintage intact for future generations to study. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of Barber's engraving. With an actual gold weight of just 0.0483 troy ounces, this diminutive coin represents a fascinating intersection of American history, presidential commemoration, and early twentieth-century numismatic art.
