In 1905, the United States commemorated the epic overland journey of the nation's most famous exploring duo with a special gold dollar. This coin is notable for its dual-portrait format, dedicating one side to Meriwether Lewis and the opposite side to William Clark. This design choice makes it a standout piece among early commemorative issues, celebrating the spirit of discovery that defined the American West. Crafted from 90% gold, the coin contains 0.0483 troy ounces of precious metal. The design was executed by Charles Barber, a prominent figure in American coinage. The obverse features the profile of Meriwether Lewis, while the reverse is dedicated to William Clark. The surrounding inscriptions include reference to the Portland, Oregon exposition, alongside the denomination of one dollar and the year 1905. With a very limited mintage of just 10,041 pieces, this coin is a scarce survivor from the turn of the twentieth century. This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, showing only minor traces of wear from its long history and retaining much of its original luster.
