1905-S Barber Quarter VG
The 1905 Barber Quarter represents a fascinating era of United States coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint during the early twentieth century. Composed of 90 percent silver, this twenty-five cent piece contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. It survives today in Very Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that actively circulated in the daily commerce of its time. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a dignified profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap underneath a classical laurel wreath. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed above her head, with the year 1905 anchored at the bottom of the design. The reverse showcases a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. A protective shield rests upon the eagle's chest, while its beak holds a flowing banner. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" encircle this classic national motif.
