Struck in 1909 at the Philadelphia Mint, this silver quarter dollar represents a classic era of United States coinage. Composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal, the coin carries the artistry of Charles Barber, whose work defined the look of American pocket change at the turn of the twentieth century. The obverse presents a profile of Lady Liberty facing right. She wears a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. Above her image, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, while the year 1909 is anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle dominates the design with its wings spread wide. A protective shield covers the bird's chest, while its talons grasp an olive branch of peace and a bundle of arrows representing strength.
