In 1910, Mexico introduced a silver one peso coin that would become celebrated for its artistic beauty. This issue, struck in 0.903 fine silver with a total silver content of 0.7859 troy ounces, is widely known for its dynamic and elegant imagery. Despite its artistic ambition, this specific design had a brief lifespan in active circulation, making surviving examples in high grades especially intriguing to study. The reverse of the coin features a striking depiction of Liberty riding a horse, holding a laurel branch and a torch aloft against the backdrop of a rising sun. This equestrian motif gives the coin its popular nickname, Caballito. The obverse displays the traditional Mexican coat of arms, showing an eagle perched on a cactus while gripping a snake in its beak, surrounded by the inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Struck at the Mexico City Mint, this coin represents a collaborative artistic effort. The original design by Charles Pillet was modified by Charles Barber to prepare it for production. With a total mintage of 3,814,000, this coin remains a captivating example of early twentieth-century Mexican numismatic art, preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition.
