The year 1912 marked a classic era in American coinage, represented beautifully by this Barber half dollar. Struck in 90% silver, this fifty-cent piece has survived the decades in Extra Fine condition, meaning much of its original design detail remains crisp and visible to the curious observer. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin carries no mintmark, which is characteristic of the main facility's output during this period. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a regal profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap paired with a laurel wreath, a combination rich in classical symbolism. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" arches above her head, while the year "1912" is anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle commands attention. The bird is depicted with its wings spread wide, protecting a shield positioned across its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon inscribed with the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Its talons grasp both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing the dual concepts of peace and readiness.
