1914-S Barber Quarter Fine

0.1788 troy oz .900 1914 Fine

The 1914-S Barber Quarter represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage, originating from the San Francisco Mint during an era of classic silver currency. This particular coin is struck in 90 percent silver, containing 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. It survives today in Fine condition, showing honest wear that tells the story of its journey through daily commerce over a century ago. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the quarter displays a dignified portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath, a classic symbol of freedom and victory. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" arches above her head, while the year "1914" is anchored at the bottom. The word "LIBERTY" is subtly visible on the band of her cap. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle commands attention with its wings outstretched. The eagle supports a shield across its chest and holds a banner in its beak inscribed with "E PLURIBUS UNUM". In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows, representing strength. The mint mark "S" is positioned below the eagle, identifying its origin at the San Francisco Mint, which produced a remarkably low run of only 264,000 of these quarters in 1914.
