Introduced in the 1870s, the Trade Dollar represents a distinctive chapter in American coinage. These silver pieces, struck from 1873 to 1878, had a total production of under 36 million across the entire five year span. Each coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.7874 troy ounces of the precious metal. The obverse of the coin displays a seated figure of Lady Liberty resting upon bales of merchandise next to coastal waters, holding a branch with a wheat bundle behind her. This side also bears the classic mottos of Liberty and In God We Trust. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is depicted holding both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions on the reverse highlight the coin's weight and purity, reading 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE, along with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TRADE DOLLAR.
