1878-S Trade Dollar Fine

0.7874 troy oz .900 1878 Fine

The 1878-S Trade Dollar represents a fascinating chapter in United States coinage, minted during a brief five-year production window. Designed by William Barber, this silver coin contains 0.7874 troy ounces of precious metal with a purity of 0.900. Throughout the entire series, fewer than 36 million of these distinctive trade dollars were ever produced, making each surviving specimen a compelling object of study. On the obverse side, Lady Liberty is depicted in a seated position, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The lower portion of the design displays the year 1878 alongside the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This side captures a classic allegorical representation of Liberty looking out across the sea. The reverse of the coin showcases a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread. Below the eagle, the San Francisco Mint mark, a small letter S, is visible. The reverse inscriptions highlight the coin's specific weight and purity standards, reading 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE, alongside the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TRADE DOLLAR.
