1878-S Trade Dollar AU
The 1878-S Trade Dollar represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage history. Minted in San Francisco, this silver coin was part of a specialized series struck during a brief five-year window. With a total production of fewer than 36 million pieces across the entire series, finding an example in Almost Uncirculated 55 condition offers a remarkable look at the craftsmanship of the late nineteenth century. Designed by William Barber, the coin's obverse features a seated depiction of Lady Liberty surrounded by thirteen stars, with the year 1878 inscribed below. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. On the reverse, just below the eagle, the 'S' mint mark indicates its origin from the San Francisco Mint. Struck from 0.900 fine silver, the coin contains 0.7874 troy ounces of precious metal. The reverse inscriptions highlight its specific weight and purity standards, reading '420 GRAINS, 900 FINE' alongside 'TRADE DOLLAR' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. This certified coin stands as a beautifully preserved example of a short-lived American silver series.
