The 1878-S Trade Dollar represents a fascinating moment in silver coinage, struck during a brief five year production window. This particular coin, bearing the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint on its reverse, is composed of 0.700 silver purity, containing 0.7874 troy ounces of precious metal. Across the entire series, fewer than 36 million of these specialized dollars were ever produced, making each surviving example a compelling object of study. Designed by William Barber, the obverse of the coin displays a seated figure of Lady Liberty, who is surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars. The inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" is visible on this side, alongside the 1878 date. The reverse features a bold heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, accompanied by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TRADE DOLLAR." The precise specifications of the coin are also proudly displayed on the reverse, reading "420 GRAINS" and "900 FINE."
