During the 1870s, the United States issued a specialized silver coin known as the Trade Dollar. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.7874 troy ounces, this coin was specifically designed to facilitate commerce. The examples from 1873 to 1878 that survive in Very Good condition show the clear, honest wear of a coin that likely traveled far in trade. The obverse design presents Lady Liberty seated upon bales of merchandise at the water's edge, holding an olive branch. A sheaf of wheat rests behind her, symbolizing agricultural abundance, while the coastal waters stretch out before her. This side also bears the traditional inscriptions "In God We Trust" and "Liberty." On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted grasping three arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The inscriptions on this side emphasize the coin's exact standards, declaring the weight and purity as "420 GRAINS" and "900 FINE" alongside the denomination "TRADE DOLLAR" and the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." This explicit declaration of silver content made the coin a trusted medium of exchange.
