In 1875, the San Francisco Mint struck this silver Trade Dollar, a coin specifically designed to facilitate commerce far beyond American borders. Weighing in with a silver content of 0.7874 troy ounces, these pieces were minted with a purity of 0.900 silver. This particular specimen survived the decades in exceptional condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63). The obverse features the classic figure of Liberty, accompanied by the familiar motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date 1875. The reverse showcases an eagle alongside the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TRADE DOLLAR." Crucially, the reverse also displays the coin's precise specifications: "420 GRAINS, 900 FINE," which served as a guarantee of its weight and purity to merchants abroad. The "S" mint mark beneath the eagle indicates its origin at the San Francisco facility, which produced 4,487,000 of these trade coins that year.
