The 1876 Trade Dollar represents a short-lived chapter in American coinage, minted during a brief five-year production run. This particular silver coin, struck at the San Francisco Mint, contains 0.7874 troy ounces of 0.900 fine silver. Across the entire series, fewer than 36 million of these specialized dollars were ever produced, making each surviving specimen a compelling object of study. Designed by William Barber, the obverse of the coin displays a seated figure of Lady Liberty, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The year 1876 is clearly inscribed at the base. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings unfolded. Below the eagle, the distinctive 'S' mint mark indicates its origin from the San Francisco facility, alongside inscriptions detailing the coin's weight and purity of 420 grains and 900 fine.
