1876-S Trade Dollar XF (Chopmarks)

In 1876, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of silver Trade Dollars, producing 5,227,000 of these specialized coins. Designed to facilitate commerce far beyond American borders, each coin contains 0.7874 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900. This particular specimen survives in Extremely Fine condition, bearing the physical evidence of its travels through merchant hands. The obverse of the coin displays a seated figure of Lady Liberty positioned atop a bale of merchandise, holding a ribbon inscribed with the word "LIBERTY" while the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" rests on the supporting foundation. Below this scene is the date of 1876. The reverse features a powerful eagle with spread wings, grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The inscriptions on this side denote its weight and purity as "420 GRAINS, 900 FINE" alongside "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TRADE DOLLAR." Positioned on the reverse is the "S" mint mark, indicating its origin from the San Francisco facility. What makes this piece especially intriguing are the chopmarks stamped into its surface, a common practice by merchants of the era to verify the silver content during transactions.
