0.7874 troy oz .900 1876 Extra Fine

In the late nineteenth century, the United States introduced a specialized silver coin designed to facilitate international commerce, particularly with East Asia. This 1876 Trade Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint, represents a brief five year period in American numismatic history when these heavy silver pieces were produced. With a total production of fewer than 36 million pieces across the entire series, these coins remain highly compelling objects of study. Designed by William Barber, the coin features a detailed depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse. She is shown seated on a bale of goods, holding an olive branch toward the sea, surrounded by thirteen stars to represent the original colonies. The inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are accompanied by the 1876 date. This particular specimen has survived in Extra Fine condition, preserving the distinct details of the original engraving. The reverse of the coin displays a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread, grasping arrows and an olive branch. The inscriptions declare the coin's precise specifications: "420 GRAINS, 900 FINE," alongside "TRADE DOLLAR" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also visible. Positioned just below the eagle, the "S" mint mark identifies this piece as a product of the San Francisco Minting facility, which played a central role in producing these silver coins for overseas trade.
