1877-S Trade Dollar XF
In the late nineteenth century, the United States produced a specialized silver coin intended to facilitate international commerce. Minted from 1873 to 1878, the Trade Dollar series had a total production of fewer than 36 million examples. Among these is the 1877 issue struck at the San Francisco Mint, which carries a distinctive 'S' mint mark on its reverse side, positioned just beneath the central design element. The obverse of this silver dollar displays Lady Liberty in a seated position, surrounded by an arc of thirteen stars. The year 1877 is inscribed at the base, with the traditional mottoes 'LIBERTY' and 'IN GOD WE TRUST' integrated into the design. Composed of 900 fine silver, the coin contains exactly 0.7874 troy ounces of precious metal. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings fully spread. The inscriptions surrounding the eagle declare the coin's weight and purity as '420 GRAINS. 900 FINE.' alongside the words 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'TRADE DOLLAR'. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, offering a fascinating look at a brief and unique era in American coinage history.
