1878-S Trade Dollar XF

0.7874 troy oz .900 1878 Extra Fine

In 1878, the San Francisco Mint produced a distinct silver coin known as the Trade Dollar. This issue, graded in Extra Fine condition, represents a brief era in American numismatics when these specialized coins were minted. Over a short five year production span, fewer than 36 million of these trade-focused pieces were struck in total across all mints. The obverse of this coin showcases Lady Liberty in a seated position, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. Below her sits the date of 1878, accompanied by the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" near the base. The design, created by William Barber, contains 0.7874 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900. On the reverse, a bold heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings unfolded. The inscriptions clearly state the coin's weight and purity specifications as "420 GRAINS, 900 FINE" alongside the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "TRADE DOLLAR". Positioned just below the eagle, the "S" mint mark identifies this piece as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
