1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter Type-I Fine

0.1788 troy oz .900 1917 Fine

The 1917 Standing Liberty quarter represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage, particularly this Type I specimen struck at the Denver Mint. Minted from 90% silver, these coins circulated widely until the introduction of copper and nickel clad coinage prompted people to save them for their precious metal content. Today, surviving examples in Fine condition offer a tangible look at early twentieth-century American design. Created by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, the obverse of the coin presents a striking, militaristic depiction of Liberty. She is shown stepping forward through an opening in a wall, holding a protective shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" is visible on the gateway. This design captures a unique blend of strength and peace during a turbulent global era. The reverse of the coin features a majestic eagle soaring through the sky. Accompanied by the traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", this soaring bird represents the national spirit. Collectors and history enthusiasts find these early Type I quarters particularly compelling due to their distinct design elements, which were modified later in the same production year.
