In 2016, the United States Mint marked the centennial of a legendary era in American numismatics by recreating one of its most famous designs in pure gold. This special release honors the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, a coin originally struck in silver from 1916 to 1930. As the second entry in a series celebrating the early twentieth-century renaissance of American coinage, this modern tribute transforms the original circulating twenty-five cent piece into a precious metal masterpiece containing one-quarter ounce of 0.9999 fine gold. The obverse features Hermon MacNeil's classic depiction of Lady Liberty stepping through a gap in a stone wall. She holds an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other, flanked by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The face of the coin is inscribed with 'LIBERTY' and 'IN GOD WE TRUST', alongside modern indicators of its gold purity and weight, which read 'AU24K' and '1/4 oz.' above the 2016 date. On the reverse, also designed by MacNeil, an eagle is shown in mid-flight with its wings fully spread, surrounded by thirteen stars. Struck at the West Point Mint in New York and bearing the 'W' mint mark, this coin features a reeded edge and has been certified in Specimen 70 condition, highlighting the exceptional detail of its historic design.
