2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter SP-70 PCGS (FDI)
In 2016, the United States Mint celebrated a major numismatic milestone by recreating one of its most famous twentieth-century designs in precious metal. This special release marks the 100th anniversary of the Standing Liberty Quarter, a classic twenty-five cent coin originally minted in silver from 1916 to 1930. Struck at the West Point facility in New York, this modern tribute transforms the historic circulating design into a quarter-ounce of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold. The obverse, designed by Hermon MacNeil, presents Lady Liberty stepping forward through a stone opening adorned with thirteen stars. In her hands, she holds a protective shield and an olive branch. The face of the coin is inscribed with the word LIBERTY, the traditional motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the year 2016, alongside modern purity markings reading AU 24K and 1/4 oz. On the reverse, also created by Hermon MacNeil, a majestic eagle is captured mid-flight with its wings fully spread, surrounded by thirteen stars. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM. Featuring a reeded edge and a circulation strike finish, this gold coin offers a fascinating bridge between America's coinage past and modern minting technology.
