In 2016, the United States Mint embarked on a special three-part series to celebrate the centennial of some of its most famous early twentieth-century coin designs. As the second release in this commemorative trio, this quarter-dollar coin recreates the historic 1916 Standing Liberty design, transforming it from its original silver composition into a modern masterpiece of pure gold. Struck at the West Point Mint in New York, the coin contains one-quarter ounce of 0.9999 fine gold and features a traditional reeded edge. The obverse showcases Hermon MacNeil's classic depiction of Lady Liberty walking through a stone gateway. She holds an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other, flanked by a wall adorned with 13 stars. This side also displays the inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", the year "2016", and modern indicators of its gold content reading "AU24K" and "1/4 oz.". On the reverse, also designed by Hermon MacNeil, a majestic eagle is captured mid-flight with its wings fully spread. The flying eagle is surrounded by 13 stars, completing a powerful visual narrative of early twentieth-century American coinage, now preserved with a circulation strike finish on a highly pure gold canvas.
