1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter Type-I MS-64 NGC (FH)

0.1788 troy oz .900 1917 MS-64 (NGC)

In 1917, the Denver Mint struck a limited run of 1,509,200 Standing Liberty quarters. This particular silver piece represents the original Type I design, which was only produced during the earliest stages of the series. Struck in 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.1788 troy ounces, this coin is a remarkable survivor from the era of World War I. The obverse features Liberty standing in a gateway, holding a shield and an olive branch. The inscription "IN GOD WE TRVST" is split on either side of her, with the date 1917 positioned at the very bottom. This specimen is certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64) with the Full Head designation, indicating that the intricate details of Liberty's hair and helmet are exceptionally well-defined and sharp. On the reverse, a soaring eagle is depicted in flight, flanked by the traditional mottoes of the United States. The inscription reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM", alongside the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". The "D" mint mark on the coin identifies its origin from the Denver facility, making it a fascinating piece of early twentieth-century American coinage.
