1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter Type-I XF
The 1917 Standing Liberty quarter struck at the Denver Mint represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage. This particular coin is a Type I variety, minted during the initial phase of the series before major design modifications were introduced. Crafted from 90 percent silver, it contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal and has survived in Extra Fine condition, preserving its intricate details for over a century. Designed by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, the obverse of the coin presents a powerful image of Liberty stepping forward through a stone gateway. In one hand she holds an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, while her other arm supports a shield. The inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are integrated into the gate structure, with the date 1917 visible at the base. The Denver Mint's "D" mint mark is also present on this side. The reverse of the Type I design features a majestic eagle in full flight, soaring across the sky. Surrounding the bird are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," alongside the face value of twenty-five cents. This soaring eagle design, combined with the active stance of Liberty on the obverse, makes the 1917-D Type I quarter one of the most visually compelling silver coins of the early twentieth century.
