1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter Type-I Good
The 1917 Standing Liberty quarter represents an intriguing era in United States coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this Type I coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Even in a worn, well-traveled state, the coin retains the essential character of its original artistry. The obverse design, created by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, presents a powerful and militaristic depiction of Liberty. She is shown stepping forward through a stone gateway, holding an olive branch of peace in one hand while raising a protective shield with the other. The inscriptions on this side include the motto of trust and the word Liberty, though the passage of time and circulation have softened these details. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is captured mid-flight, soaring across the sky. This dynamic image is accompanied by the traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one, alongside the national identification. This particular issue remains a fascinating specimen for those who appreciate the evolution of early twentieth-century American coin design.
