1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter Type-II Fine

In 1917, the United States Mint released a distinct variation of the Standing Liberty quarter, known to collectors as the Type-II. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this silver coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. It represents a fascinating moment in American coinage when the central design underwent a significant modification. The obverse of this quarter, designed by Hermon MacNeil, features a powerful depiction of Liberty stepping forward through a stone gateway. In this specific Type-II version, she is outfitted in protective chainmail, holding an olive branch of peace in her right hand and a shield in her left. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the "S" mint mark of San Francisco are visible on this side of the coin. On the reverse, the coin displays a majestic eagle captured mid-flight. Surrounding the soaring bird are the traditional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the core details of this famous, short-lived 1917 design variant.
