The year 1917 marked a pivotal moment for United States coinage, particularly for the Standing Liberty Quarter. This specific piece represents the original Type I design, which was minted in Philadelphia without a mint mark. Out of a total mintage of 8,740,000 for this issue, this specimen survives in an exceptional state of preservation, graded Mint State 64 with the highly sought-after Full Head designation. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty stands guard, flanked by the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRVST and the date 1917. The Full Head designation indicates that the delicate details of Liberty's hair and helmet are exceptionally well-defined, a rare occurrence for these early strikes. The reverse displays a soaring eagle in flight, surrounded by the traditional national mottos, including E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination of one quarter dollar.
