1917 Standing Liberty Quarter Type-I XF
The 1917 Standing Liberty quarter represents a fascinating moment in American coinage, capturing a distinct artistic vision before design modifications were introduced. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this Type I coin contains approximately 0.17875 ounces of precious metal. These silver quarters were eventually withdrawn from active circulation following the transition to copper and nickel clad coinage, combined with the escalating value of silver. On the obverse, the coin displays a powerful and militaristic representation of Liberty. Designed by Hermon MacNeil, she is depicted wearing chainmail as she steps through a gateway, holding an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other. The inscription "IN COD WE TRVST" is visible, showing the classic spelling style of the era, alongside the date 1917. The reverse features an elegant eagle captured mid-flight, surrounded by the traditional Latin motto "E-PLVRIBVS VNVM". This particular specimen is preserved in Extra Fine condition, allowing observers to appreciate the intricate details of MacNeil's original composition before the design was altered later in 1917.
