1917 Standing Liberty Quarter Type-II XF

0.1788 troy oz .900 1917 Extra Fine

The year 1917 marked a significant design transition for the United States quarter, resulting in the distinctive Type II Standing Liberty variety. Struck in 90% silver, this coin represents a fascinating moment in American coinage where the central imagery was noticeably modified. On the obverse, Liberty is depicted stepping forward through a gateway. In this Type II version, she wears a protective coat of chainmail, holding an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other. The legend LIBERTY is split across the top, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in the field. The date 1917 is clearly visible at the base of the design. The reverse displays an eagle soaring through the air, flanked by stars. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The denomination is indicated at the bottom as QUARTER DOLLAR. This particular coin, minted in Philadelphia, showcases the beautiful details of Hermon MacNeil's revised artwork in Extra Fine condition.
