The 1918 Standing Liberty quarter, struck at the Denver Mint, is a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Minted in 90% silver, this coin carries approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a transitional era in United States numismatics, showcasing a design that departed dramatically from the more traditional portraits of the nineteenth century. Created by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, the obverse features a powerful depiction of Liberty stepping forward through a stone gateway. She is garbed in chainmail, holding an olive branch of peace in one hand while raising a shield of protection in the other. The legendary motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed across the gateway, flanking her figure. The reverse of the coin presents a majestic eagle captured mid-flight, wings spread wide as it soars across the sky. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM", along with the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR" across the bottom. This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the essential details of its historic, patriotic imagery.
