1918-S Standing Liberty Quarter AU
The 1918-S Standing Liberty quarter dollar represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage, blending classical allegory with the tense atmosphere of the First World War. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this silver piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Designed by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, the obverse of the coin presents a highly militaristic depiction of Liberty. Rather than wearing traditional flowing robes alone, she is shown clad in chainmail armor, stepping forward through a stone gate. In her hands, she balances the dual themes of peace and defense, holding an olive branch in one hand and a protective shield in the other. The year 1918 is clearly visible at her feet, alongside the San Francisco 'S' mint mark and the motto 'IN GOD WE TRVST' spelled with a classical 'V'. On the reverse, the coin features a powerful eagle soaring through the sky. This central image is surrounded by the inscriptions 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', the traditional Latin motto 'E PLVRIBVS VNVM', and the denomination 'QUARTER DOLLAR'. This particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of both the defensive gate on the obverse and the feathers of the flying eagle on the reverse.
