The 1919 Standing Liberty quarter is a fascinating artifact from the early twentieth century, showcasing a bold and active depiction of Liberty. Struck in 90 percent silver, this twenty-five cent piece contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. The coin comes in a Very Fine grade, meaning it has survived the decades with much of its original detail and character intact. On the obverse side, the design by Hermon MacNeil presents a highly unique, militaristic portrayal of Liberty. Rather than a passive bust, she is shown in motion, stepping through a stone gateway. She wears defensive chainmail, holding a protective shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing a desire for peace backed by the strength to defend it. The surrounding inscriptions include the word LIBERTY and the classic motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse of the coin features an elegant eagle captured mid-flight, wings spread wide as it soars across the sky. This powerful image is accompanied by the national inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR. Minted in Philadelphia, this coin carries no mint mark, which was the standard practice for the main facility at the time.
