1920-S Standing Liberty Quarter AU
The 1920 Standing Liberty quarter represents a fascinating era in United States coinage, blending classical allegory with bold, early twentieth-century design. Struck in 90 percent silver at the San Francisco mint, this twenty-five cent piece carries the distinctive 'S' mintmark on its obverse, signifying its West Coast origin. Hermon MacNeil designed this striking coin. The obverse features a powerful image of Liberty stepping through a stone gateway. In one hand, she holds an olive branch as a symbol of peace, while her other arm supports a protective shield. The legends 'LIBERTY' and the traditional motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' are inscribed across the field, framing her figure. On the reverse, the coin displays a majestic eagle captured mid-flight. This soaring bird is surrounded by the inscriptions 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', and the denomination 'QUARTER DOLLAR'. Containing 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal, this particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of MacNeil's original artistic vision.
