1920 Standing Liberty Quarter Fine (Partial Date)
The 1920 Standing Liberty Quarter represents a fascinating era in United States coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this twenty-five cent piece comes from a time before the nation transitioned to copper and nickel clad compositions. These precious silver issues were eventually withdrawn from active circulation as the demand for silver rose and the coinage metal composition changed in the mid twentieth century. On the obverse side, the design by Hermon MacNeil presents a powerful image of Liberty walking through a stone gateway. She is depicted wearing protective chainmail, holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing a balance between defense and peace. The inscriptions surrounding her include the word LIBERTY and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST, rendered with a classic V in place of the U in trust. The reverse of the coin showcases a majestic eagle captured in midflight with its wings fully spread. This soaring bird is accompanied by the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, along with the legends indicating the issuing country, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR. Philadelphia minted more than 27 million of these quarters in 1920, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of early twentieth-century American design.
