In 1920, the Philadelphia Mint produced a silver quarter that remains a high point of American numismatic design. Struck in 90 percent silver with a weight containing 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal, this particular coin has survived in an exceptional state of preservation, certified by independent experts at a high-grade Mint State 65. The obverse of the coin features a powerful depiction of Liberty walking through an opening in a wall or gate. In one hand she holds a defensive shield, while in the other she extends an olive branch, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The year 1920 is clearly visible at the base, along with the classic national motto. Because this piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it does not bear a mint mark. On the reverse, the design showcases an eagle in mid-flight, soaring across the sky. This dynamic depiction of the national bird is accompanied by the traditional inscriptions of the United States of America, the denomination of one quarter dollar, and the Latin phrase meaning out of many, one.
