1923 Standing Liberty Quarter AU
The 1923 Standing Liberty quarter is a fascinating example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this twenty-five cent piece represents a period of artistic transition in United States currency, combining classical allegory with contemporary national sentiments. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty is depicted in a surprisingly militaristic fashion. Rather than wearing traditional soft robes, she is shown clad in chainmail armor as she steps forward through an opening in a wall. In her hands, she bears both an olive branch of peace and a protective shield. The legends surrounding her include the word LIBERTY, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST (spelled with a classical V in TRVST), and the date 1923 at the base. The reverse of the coin showcases a majestic eagle captured mid-flight. This soaring bird is surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. With a total silver content of approximately 0.1808 troy ounces, this coin is a remarkable specimen of American engraving art, preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition.
