The 1924 Standing Liberty quarter represents a fascinating era in United States coinage, minted during a time when circulating coins were composed of 90 percent silver. This particular quarter contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Because these silver pieces were actively used in daily commerce, they were eventually withdrawn from circulation when the nation transitioned to copper and nickel clad coinage in the mid 1960s. Designed by Hermon MacNeil, the obverse of the coin presents a powerful, militaristic depiction of Liberty. She is shown wearing protective chainmail as she steps through a gateway, holding an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other.
