The 1925 Standing Liberty Quarter is a captivating example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver, this piece contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. The Philadelphia Mint produced 12,280,000 of these quarters in 1925, and surviving specimens in brilliant uncirculated condition allow us to appreciate the intricate details of the original artistry just as it looked nearly a century ago. Designed by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, the obverse of the coin presents a powerful image of Liberty. She is depicted wearing protective chainmail while stepping forward through a stone gateway. In her hands, she holds an olive branch of peace and a shield of defense. The inscriptions on this side include the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" (rendered classically as "IN COD WE TRVST") and the 1925 date at the base of the design. The reverse of the coin features a majestic eagle captured mid-flight, soaring across the sky. Surrounding the eagle are the bold inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR", alongside the traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (spelled "E PLVRIBVS VNVM"). This combination of martial readiness and peaceful aspiration makes the Standing Liberty Quarter one of the most visually compelling series in United States numismatic history.
