1926-S Standing Liberty Quarter Fine

0.1788 troy oz .900 1926 Fine

The 1926 Standing Liberty quarter represents a fascinating era in United States coinage, blending classical allegory with the anxieties of a world recovering from major global conflict. Minted in San Francisco, this twenty-five cent piece is struck from 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. Even in Fine condition, the coin retains the essential elements of its powerful, complex imagery. Hermon MacNeil designed the coin with a highly detailed obverse that presents Liberty in an active, defensive posture. She is depicted wearing a coat of chainmail, stepping forward through an opening in a stone wall. In her hands, she holds both an olive branch of peace and a protective shield, symbolizing a nation prepared for defense but desiring harmony. The inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" is split across the gateway, while the year 1926 is clearly visible at the base of the design. The reverse of the coin shifts to a dynamic depiction of an eagle soaring through the sky. Surrounding the majestic bird are the legends "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," alongside the denomination of "QUARTER DOLLAR." This combination of a heavily armed Liberty and a powerful flying eagle makes the Standing Liberty quarter one of the most visually compelling designs in American numismatic history.
