The 1928 Standing Liberty quarter is a fascinating artifact from the interwar period of United States coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this twenty-five cent piece contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. The design, created by sculptor Hermon MacNeil, presents a powerful and unique visualization of Liberty that differs significantly from earlier, more peaceful depictions on American currency. On the obverse, a militaristic Liberty is shown walking through a stone gate. She is clad in protective chainmail, holding a shield in one hand to signify defense, while her other hand extends an olive branch as an offering of peace. The year 1928 is clearly visible at the base of the design. Surrounding this central figure are the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and the motto "IN COD WE TRVST", utilizing the classical spelling of the word trust. The reverse of the coin showcases a majestic eagle captured mid-flight. This soaring bird is flanked by the national inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLVRIBVS VNVM", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of both the defensive armor on the obverse and the feathers of the eagle on the reverse.
