The 1929 Standing Liberty quarter dollar, struck at the Denver Mint, is a compelling example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Minted in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.17875 troy ounces, this coin represents the final years of its short-lived and highly celebrated design series. On the obverse side, Liberty is depicted in an active, forward-moving pose as she steps through an opening in a wall. She is outfitted in protective chainmail, holding a shield in one hand to signify defense and an olive branch in the other as a symbol of peace. The date is positioned at the base of the design, a feature that was prone to wearing away quickly during circulation, making legible dates on these coins particularly notable. The inscriptions surrounding the figure include the words IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse of the coin displays a powerful eagle soaring through the air, flanked by the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR are boldly inscribed around the upper and lower borders. Sculptor Hermon MacNeil created this artistic composition, which remains one of the most visually distinctive designs in the history of United States currency.
