In 2016, the United States Mint celebrated a major milestone in American coinage by releasing a special centennial tribute to the classic Standing Liberty Quarter. Originally introduced in 1916 and struck in silver until 1930, this iconic design was recreated a century later as the second entry in a series honoring historic hundred-year-old coin designs. Unlike the circulating silver pieces of the past, this modern commemorative version is struck in one-quarter ounce of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold. The obverse features Hermon MacNeil's classic depiction of Lady Liberty stepping forward through an opening in a stone wall. She holds a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, flanked by thirteen stars. This gold version includes the updated inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 2016 date, alongside modern purity markings reading AU24K and 1/4 oz. The West Point mint mark is also visible on this side. On the reverse, MacNeil's design showcases an eagle soaring with its wings fully spread, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. This particular specimen has been graded in Specimen 69 condition, showcasing the sharp details of the reeded edge and the distinctive finish of this modern gold release.
