2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter SP-70 PCGS
In 2016, the United States Mint marked the centenary of a classic American coin design by releasing a special commemorative quarter. This modern tribute recreates the iconic Standing Liberty quarter, which was originally minted in silver from 1916 to 1930. Unlike its twentieth-century predecessor, this centennial release is struck in 0.2500 troy ounces of 24-karat gold, boasting a purity of 0.9999 fine. Produced at the West Point facility in New York, this specimen-70 graded coin features a reeded edge and a circulation strike finish. The obverse, designed by Hermon MacNeil, depicts Lady Liberty stepping through a gap in a wall adorned with 13 stars. She holds a protective shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both defense and peace. Legible inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 2016, alongside the metal specifications AU24K and 1/4 oz. Hermon MacNeil also designed the reverse, which showcases a majestic eagle soaring with its wings fully spread. The flying eagle is flanked by 13 stars, mirroring the patriotic theme of the obverse. This gold release belongs to a broader series of centennial issues honoring the beloved coin designs introduced a century prior.
