In 2016, the United States Mint celebrated a major numismatic milestone by recreating one of its most famous twentieth-century circulating designs in precious metal. This special issue marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Standing Liberty Quarter, a design that originally debuted in 1916 and was minted until 1930, with the sole exception of 1922. Struck at the West Point facility in New York, this modern tribute is crafted from one-quarter ounce of 0.9999 fine gold and features a reeded edge. The obverse side, originally created by Hermon MacNeil, shows Lady Liberty stepping forward through a gap in a wall adorned with thirteen stars. In her hands, she holds a protective shield and an olive branch. The front of the coin bears several inscriptions, including the traditional phrases LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the year 2016 and notations for its metal content, AU24K and 1/4 oz. On the reverse, also designed by Hermon MacNeil, an eagle is captured mid-flight with its wings fully spread, surrounded by thirteen stars. The classic motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible on this side. This 2016 release captures the details of the historic original while presenting it with a modern gold composition, offering a fascinating look back at American coinage history.
